The Company
Silicon Microgravity Limited is a privately held company focused on developing and applying innovative technology primarily to improve surveillance appraisal and production of oil and gas with additional application to CO2 storage, water management, mining and defence. Our technology has the potential to disrupt current practices in oil/gas production and advance reservoir surveillance so that our clients can achieve real efficiencies and cost savings while meeting their desired social, safety and environmental goals.
Our roots are in the extensive research from Cambridge University Nanoscience Centre over 10 years with the underpinning sensor technology innovation developed in collaboration with BP plc.
The technology developed by SMG has the ability of capturing gravitational data at sensitivities not easily or economically achievable. The increased sensitivity of data is of significant commercial interest to oil companies as it will enable the more efficient and cost-effective surveillance of their oil and gas fields. The service product offered by SMG relies on an ultra-sensitive, yet robust gravitational sensors developed at Cambridge University coupled with the interpretation skills within the company. The technology is wireline deployed and can be used for repeat logging/monitoring over time. The service is offered for deployment with generically available wireline providers, and with future application to permanent down-hole installations.
Launched with initial funding of $3m from venture capitalists (VCs) in London and Cambridge together with grant funding from the UK Government and now has successfully completed a further $7m investment round, allowing the company to commercialise its technology and grow rapidly. Subsequent ‘gyro’ funding has come from Innovate UK and Investors, along with a recent grant from the Ministry of Defence, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL).
With our latest investment phase complete, our focus is now one of rapid expansion and commercialization of our technology and the build-out of numerous potential application areas to benefit our customers.
SMG is adding to, and developing a strong and growing position in microgravity arena. It has a growing technology IP portfolio across 8 patent families generating 16 granted patents.
