Gravity
SMG’s gravity sensor is based around our resonant MEMS accelerometer technology. The core sensor is a 7mm x 7mm chip with a resolution of better than 10 microGal. As such it can be deployed in a range of manners from a portable stationary system, permanently installed, on a drone / vehicle or into space.
Many applications for gravity have been identified over the years but lack of a user friendly, sensitive enough sensor has limited the growth of the market up to now. SMG intends to change that.
Application for gravity sensors
Any change in density creates a change in gravity. In mining, different minerals have different densities and therefore create varying gravity but the main interest is in the detection of subsurface voids or tunnels which has long been an issue in civil and military environments. Gravity has been identified as a solution but a suitable sensor has been lacking. SMG’s GRAV10 differential gravimeter changes that.
GRAV10 can be used as a portable gravimeter or is suitable for permanent deployment.
Specific applications include:
- • Civil and infrastructure
- • Utilities
- • Security
- • Defence
- • Storage
The cost of undetected subsurface voids in these areas is significant and ranges from asset damage to illegal smuggling.
GRAV10 has the potential to be further developed as a moving platform which could be deployed in a vehicle or drone in order to survey large areas.
GRAV10 Specifications
The SMG GRAV10 is a resonant MEMS vibrating beam relative gravimeter with a resolution of better than 10 microGal. GRAV10 includes automated compensation for temperature, pressure, instrument tilt and tide. The GRAV10 filters seismic noise filter and compensates for sensor drift. GRAV10 interfaces with a laptop or tablet via WiFi, Bluetooth or Ethernet for display and controls GRAV10 includes a GPS capability for accurate location. Rechargeable batteries provide 15 hours of continuous operation.
